São Paulo, Brazil – Segura®, a global leader in Privileged Access Management (PAM) and Identity Security, was proudly invited to participate in Locked Shields 2025, the largest and most advanced cyber defense exercise in the world, organized by the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence – CCDCOE.
This year’s event brought together more than 4,000 participants from 41 nations, simulating highly sophisticated cyberattacks targeting critical national infrastructure, including power grids, 5G networks, satellite communications, and credential systems. The exercise tested not only technical defense capabilities but also legal, strategic, and crisis communication response under extreme pressure.
Segura® was represented by Joseph Carson, Chief Security Evangelist and Advisory CISO, who served as a Blue Team Defender and subject matter expert in credential protection.
“In Locked Shields 2025, my mission was to secure authentication systems, monitor for credential abuse, and rapidly respond to privilege escalation attempts,” explained Joseph Carson. “The exercise simulates relentless, highly sophisticated attacks that demand both technical precision and seamless collaboration under pressure.”

The event featured a live-fire environment with participants defending an infrastructure of 300+ virtualized devices and over 1,200 privileged credentials, under constant attack from Red Teams simulating real-world adversaries. This year’s exercise introduced advanced threat scenarios incorporating AI-driven attacks, quantum computing risks, and disinformation campaigns.
“One of the biggest challenges was maintaining situational awareness while under continuous attack,” Carson added. “It tested not just our ability to defend, but how effectively we communicated and coordinated in real time. Every second counted.”
Reflecting on the broader impact, Carson noted:
“Locked Shields reinforces the importance of resilience—not just preventing attacks but ensuring systems can recover and adapt under pressure. It’s one of the most effective platforms for fostering international cybersecurity cooperation, where trust, shared knowledge, and rapid response are key.”
Organized annually by the NATO CCDCOE in Tallinn, Estonia, Locked Shields demonstrates how cybersecurity has become a fundamental domain of defense, alongside land, sea, air, and space.
